Once upon a time...life
Once Upon a Time Life
Albert Barillé's animation series have already in over three decades reached a legendary status. They have introduced us to mankinds history, space, great inventions and explorers. With easily adoptable and enthralling story telling these adventure animations have not only educated but also left a memorable mark in children's minds from over the decades. In this third part of the "Once Upon a Time..." -series we take a dive inside the human body. We grow familiar, for example, with white blood cells - the tiny police inside our vains - and with the functions of brain and heart.

”A ‘head-fake,’ occurs when someone is taught a deeper lesson under the pretense of learning something simple — when a high school football player learns determination, teamwork, and perseverance while seeming to learn a proper three-point stance, for instance.” – Randy Pausch

ManyEyes: Data Visualization for the Public
IBM Research's free tool ManyEyes enables users to upload data files and generate a wide range of visualizations, from simple charts and graphs to more sophisticated forms like treemaps and network diagrams. Launched in January 2007, the site now counts some 60,000 user-created visualizations of numeric and textual data. A version of the site was launched on The New York Times' website as a "visualization lab", furnished with data sets compiled by The Times.

"Mercury" Medical Research and Writing

Le Laboratoire, located in Paris’s first arrondissement, invites the public to experience the creative process that drives innovation and value in culture as in industry, society, and education as a fusion of art and of science producing tangible – if transient – art and design outcomes. These outcomes or “works-in-progress” result from experiments conceived of and led by leading international artists in collaboration with leading international scientists. Le Lab is a kind of off-Broadway, or pre-museum, aiming to catalyze change in culture, industry, society and education with partners who invest in the exploration process more decidedly than in the guarantee of any outcome this process might produce.

3D structure determination from a single view
"The ability to determine the structure of matter in three dimensions has profoundly advanced our understanding of nature. Traditionally, the most widely used schemes for three-dimensional (3D) structure determination of an object are implemented by acquiring multiple measurements over various sample orientations, as in the case of crystallography and tomography, or by scanning a series of thin sections through the sample, as in confocal microscopy. Here we present a 3D imaging modality, termed ankylography (derived from the Greek words ankylos meaning ‘curved’ and graphein meaning ‘writing’), which under certain circumstances enables complete 3D structure determination from a single exposure using a monochromatic incident beam. 3D image reconstruction in ankylography proceeds by means of an iterative algorithm. With further development, this approach of obtaining complete 3D structure information from a single view could find broad applications in the physical and life sciences."Artigo publicado na revista Nature, 14 Janeiro 2010
Molecular Maya Toolkit
"McGill announced free software called Molecular Maya Toolkit that allows researchers to automatically bring protein structures into a cellular landscape using data from online repositories. Meeting attendee Patrick Huehls of Indiana University in Bloomington believes the toolkit will be highly used, and not only by those hoping to bring science to nonexperts. Scientists themselves are coming to depend on animation, he says. "It's becoming more part of discovery than an endpoint."
Charles Darwin and the Tree of Life
"A cool video of BBC’s Darwin season featuring ‘Charles Darwin and the Tree of Life’ – a cool animation which illustrates an idea that Darwin and his contemporaries used to explain the evolutionary links between living things."
